Le management, art de l’efficacité et non du profit : étude du champ lexical du terme « management » dans la littérature anglophone depuis la fin du XVIIIe siècle

À la lumière d’une étude lexicale et historique des usages du terme « management » par des auteurs anglais et américains depuis la fin du XVIIIe siècle, il apparaît que le principe de profit n’est pas un opérateur théorique privilégié par les penseurs de cette notion. Le management ne serait pas par nature à but lucratif. Bien au contraire, ce concept semble avoir été construit sémantiquement, depuis la fin du XVIIIe siècle, dans le rejet du référentiel marchand. L’efficacité, bien davantage que le profit, constitue le principe directeur de la rationalité managériale. Plutôt que de naturaliser cette notion d’efficacité et de l’introniser mètre-étalon universel des phénomènes organisationnels, il fait sens d’analyser comment et pourquoi elle en est venue à être socialement valorisée au sein des sociétés industrielles.
A historical and lexical study of the uses of the word “management” by English and American authors from the end of the 18th century reveals that the principle of profit does not constitute a major conceptual framework for the early thinkers of management. Management would not be, by nature, a for-profit activity. On the contrary, this concept seems to have been semantically built, from the end of the 18th century, upon the rejection of the market reference. Efficiency, much more than profit, is the leading principle of managerial rationality. Rather than naturalizing this notion of efficiency and making it the universal yardstick of organizational phenomena, it makes sense to analyze why and how it came to be highly valued within industrial societies.
